Dr. Ayesha Abdullah is a graduate of Khyber Medical College. She joined PMC as Vice Dean Medical Education & Research in 2007. Besides Ophthalmology, in which she did her Fellowship, she has special interests in the fields of Medical Education, research, Public Health & health policy & planning. She has got a rich professional experience of 10 years comprising a spectrum of varied clinical, public health, research & medical education related activities. As she puts it herself, “I have been very lucky as regards experience - my professional & personal life both have been gifted with a variety of experiences.” Before joining PMC she worked as an active member of the Research & Academics team of Pakistan Institute of Community Ophthalmology (PICO) - a unique human resource development (HRD) institute catering for the HRD needs of the Eastern Mediterranean Region in the field of Comprehensive Eye Care. She joined PICO as Director Pakistan Center for Vision Sciences in 2001 & later became the Deputy Director Research & Academics. During her seven years of affiliation with PICO she was involved in teaching & training, and other academic activities especially curriculum development, implementation & review of both undergraduate ( a B.Sc. Honours programme for the allied eye care personnel & a diploma in ophthalmic nursing for nurses) & postgraduate ( MSc. Community Eye Health) curricula for courses in ophthalmology for doctors, allied eye care personnel & nurses. Later on these curricula were recommended by the National Committee for the Prevention of Blindness (npblC) as the standard curricula for the allied eye care personnel in Pakistan. Dr. Abdullah also assisted Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) in reviewing their BSc Optometry course & wrote several of the study guides for the University. She has also remained a member of the National Task Force for refractive errors. In her previous capacity she designed & conducted various research projects which included two national surveys & a global human resource assessment for comprehensive eye care. Besides research & academics she has assisted in the formulation of national eye care plans for several countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait & Libya. Dr. Abdullah has participated in a number of national & international conferences & has attended several workshops in research, planning & management, communication skills, community development, eye care planning & management and medical education. Her special interests include qualitative research/ social research & medical education reforms. She believes in quality “visionary human resource development in health’, which according to her is HRD meant to serve a vision which is grounded in the socioeconomic milieu and ethical values of a society. Her current agenda includes structuring medical education at PMC at both undergraduate & postgraduate levels with special emphasis on integrated teaching, attitudinal development & problem-based learning. She also plans to assist in creating an enabling environment at PMC for the students & the faculty that could foster organizational learning in the field of medical education, public health & research. She wishes to introduce PMC as a leading HRD & Research institute in the medical profession globally. |
